13 Zetecs have a plastic thermostat housing on the back of the head which fouls the bulkhead in RWD applications. The answer is this Raceline water rail.

16 You can use a Ford Type-9 behind a Zetec but the stronger option is the MT-75. This one's from a Scorpio. Black plastic assembly is the reversing light swith.

14 We're not bothering with carbs on this car. We want it to start on a cold morning with no fuss and return modern fuel economy. And produce good power.

17 The MT-75 allows you to put the gearstick where you want it as remote selector is separate. This is Spyder's unit. Assembly could be lengthened to move stick back.

15 These Jenvey throttle bodies flow more air than sidedraughs and are cheaper too. They come with linkage and fuel rail. On left is pressure regulator.

18 And that's the Ford Zetec engine ready for the rear-wheel drive. Next month we'll fit it in the car and get on with preparing the donor Elan for its new drivetrain..
