1This is a new, 2-litre Zetec supplied by Ford. As it is, You could drop it straight into a Mondeo. But we're going to adapt it to work in a RWD application, in this case, the Elan

4 The 2-litre water pump is the lower one in the picture. We're replacing it with the 1800 Escort Zetec one behind it because the 2-litre version runs backwards

2 The water pump needs changing so Andy takes the cam cover off and locks the cams by fitting this bar into the two slots on their rear faces so cam timing can't move.

5 Here's the 1800 Escort pump installed on the engine. New pumps are only about £20 from motor factors. The engine hasn't turned during the swap so cam timing is unaffected.

3 This is the 2-litre water pump that the engine comes with. With the crank cover removed the timing belt can come off leaving the tensioner still at Ford's factory setting.

6 For this application we need to change the sump. The 2-litre version fitted has its oil well at the back of the engine, which will foul the chassis on the Elan.
