With a little bit of contortionism, you should be able to hold the bonnet catches on one side while undoing them from inside the car. You need these off to make it easier to respray the engine bay. |
11
The pedal box and the old under-dash handbrake come out by undoing six bolts in the footwell. The handbrake can be dropped away and the pedal box lifted out through the engine bay. In a baby Elan the pedal box comes out from the inside. |
12
Lever off the wiper arms, undo the retaining nuts and tap the spindles down into the car. If they're seized, soak them in WD40 or similar. Don't hit them hard as that could crack the surrounding bodywork. |

Under the dash, unbolt the covers on the wiper mechanisms (there are two) and wind the spindles round to feed out the cables. The mechanisms can then be lifted away, to be cleaned and re-greased later. |
14
Strip out the rest of the ancillaries in the engine bay, like the wiper motor shown here. Keep everything safe because what you don't need for the rebuild can be sold on to other Lotus enthusiasts later. |
15
At the car's rear, lift out the parcel shelf to expose the fuel tank. Remove the wiring to the tank then undo the two nuts holding the tank retaining straps. You may have to hold the straps with grips. |

At the top of the tank there are two 1/2" bore breather pipes routed up into the roof. They spread petrol fumes through the interior, so Spyder strips them out and fits a better breather system. |
17
Each sill strengthener is held inside the body section by three plates, with four or six nuts to each plate (remove seat belts first). There are also 11 to 14 nuts along the bottom of each sill. Grind them off. |
18
At the ends of each sill are closing plates, which were originally made from hardboard. They may have been replaced with metal. Grind them off from under the wheel arch. Pull out the old inner sills. |
