The steering column will need to be undone from the rack. Undo the pinch bolts from the coupling at the rack end of the column and tap it away from the rack. Some have a sliding joint, which makes it easier. |
11
There's a bolt on either side of the engine bay, in the inner wings, which goes through the suspension turret. Undo both. If the turret is rusty and flexing, the glassfibre around the bolt will be cracked or shattered. It's easy to repair. |
12 Now the seats have to come out. Fold them forward to undo bolts holding seat frames to the runners, then slide seats off runners and pull them out of the car. Then undo the seat runner bolts from the floor. |

Now you can get to the seatbelt stalks on the transmission tunnel. These bolt through the chassis but the Lotus manual's section on chassis swaps doesn't mention them. Wondered why that body won't come off. |
14
Lift out the rear seat cushions, then pull out the rear seat uprights. There may be pegs on the top edge of the upright, poking down into the parcel shelf, so the upright may have to be lifted first, and then out. |
15
Unscrew the gearknob and lift out the centre console (may be screwed in). The gearlever unbolts and the frame around it unscrews and pulls off, but watch out for a roll pin that secures the linkage. |

There are two earthing points in the boot that need to be undone. If the boot has leaked water then the bolts probably won't undo and you'll have to carefully grind their heads off. |
17
Now start undoing the body mounts from under the car. Start at the front, right at the beginning of the chassis rails. There's one either side of the chassis, at the ends of short body supports. |
18
The next body mounts back are just behind the front anti-roll bar mounts. You'll see felt stuffed between the chassis and the floor of the body. Note where it is, so you can replace it later. |
